Youth Activities at Bethesda-on-the-Bay
Christian Education  ◊  Youth Fellowship

Christian Education: Worship and learning go hand-in-hand. As we worship and attend learning programs together, the Lord helps us grow in our daily walk of faith. At Bethesda on the Bay we offer a wide variety of learning opportunities for young people of ALL ages.

Child Care - A childcare center for infants and toddlers is available during all Sunday services.

Sunday School - We offer classes on Sunday morning for ages 3 through adult at 9:45 AM. The curriculum helps young people learn and explore scripture at an age-appropriate level through creative ways. Our carefully-selected teachers are essential to this vital ministry.

Confirmation Instruction - Confirmation instruction is a time for our 7th and 8th graders to begin exploring what it means to be a part of the Lord’s church. They affirm their Baptism in a fall worship service. We meet on Monday evenings (with a meal and study) for two years to consider salvation history from Genesis through the life of Christ. We also view life through Luther’s Small Catechism. Our youth will learn that being a part of the Lord’s Church means serving, worshipping, mentoring, and discovering God’s way for us.

First Communion - First Communion, for 5th graders, is celebrated at the Agape Meal on Holy Thursday. Training classes occur during the Lenten season. Acolyte training coincides with First Communion training.

Vacation Bible School - Vacation Bible School is scheduled for one week in June. Hours are 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Three year olds through 6th grade are invited to attend. Each year there is a Yearly Theme. Sessions include a daily Bible lesson, games, crafts, music, snacks.

Youth Fellowship: The children and youth at Bethesda on the Bay are a very special and vital part of our congregation.

Our youth participate in community service projects, lock-ins, national and regional youth gatherings, Bible studies and discussions, sporting events, and retreats. They minister to the community by preparing and serving Thanksgiving dinner at an urban church, adopting needy families for the holidays, preparing Christmas "shoeboxes" filled with family-oriented useful items, assisting with Habitat for Humanity construction, and volunteering for local food drives. They share the faith within the Bethesda family by doing yard work and chores, and serving in the worship services. Adult volunteers from the congregation and staff provide leadership for our youth ministries.

Bethesda’s Little Servants - This is a program for small children (ages 3-6) to teach them the value of giving to others through the sharing of their talents. We will plan visits to local nursing homes, our church’s shut-ins and children’s hospitals

Disciples’ Club - This group includes children from 2nd through 5th grade. They meet one Sunday a month from 3 to 5 p.m. There is time for play, snack, simple Bible lessons, and a meaningful project to complement their learning.

Children Sermons weekly with Pastor Stylski. Special puppet visit during children’s sermon at various times throughout the year.

Jr. and Sr. High activities- These groups meet during the Sunday School hour to plan many activities. They often have fundraisers to augment ambitious projects such as Habitat for Humanity, World Hunger Relief, Haitian school aid, and youth gatherings. In July of 2009, 14 of our youth partipated in the ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans: Jesus Justice Jazz.
